The growth of organic food in Italy: ISMEA’s "Bio in figures 2020"

Snapshot of the organic market in Italy in 2020: the growth of the sector continues, with an important presence of companies dedicated to organic farming in the South and Sicily, while the North continues to drive consumption with a share that exceeds 60%.
The Ismea Sinab report “Bio in figures 2020” gives us an eloquent snapshot of the organic market in Italy: from production to employment levels, organic confirms the growth trend since the early nineties.
Organic employment in Italy: the South is strong but central Italy is emerging
There are 80,643 organic companies registered in Italy this year, 2% more than in 2018. Most of them are located in the south of the Peninsula: Sicily and Calabria as leader, followed by Puglia and the regions of central Italy, in particular the Marche (+ 32%), Lazio (+ 8%).
The products: from the great classics to the phenomenon of organic flours.
The growth of the sector continues, with an important expansion from 2010 to 2017, with a less marked positive trend starting from 2018. In 2020 the market records 3.3 billion € of consumption of organic food products.
In addition to the positive trend maintained by the leading products of the organic market in Italy, such as eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, there are new trends.
Thanks to the lockdown, the large-scale retail trade recorded an impressive peak in sales of organic flours and pizza preparations (growth calculated net of consumption by hotel restaurants and farmhouses).
